Results of randomized trials suggest that disposable vape e-cigarettes help smokers quit, and e-cigarettes release nicotine, doubling long-term quit rates. A recent randomized trial involving nearly 900 members found that e-cigarettes were actually nearly twice as competitive as pure nicotine replacement therapy in helping tobacco users quit within 1-12 months.

Despite the rapid spread of e-cigarettes in the UK and US, smoking prices have fallen (Wang et al, 2018 ONS, 2019). In the UK, details of a time-frame assessment found that increases in e-cigarette use among smokers in England were actually positively associated with increases in total cessation price and cost of cessation success. This result is supported by a U.S. Census study that showed a significant increase in smoking cessation rates among e-cigarette consumers.

The data are observational and cannot show triggers and outcomes, but they do strengthen the evidence that e-cigarettes have not interrupted the decline in tobacco use. But there is no data to suggest that e-cigarette use has slowed the decline in youth tobacco use. In fact, smoking rates among U.S. teens have declined even faster since the popularity of e-cigarettes. Never-smokers who smoke do expose themselves to avoidable health problems, but in the UK less than 1% of absolute never-smokers grow up to be standard tobacco users (Action on Smoking and Health, 2019).
